Question 1

How long does Duraphat take to work?

Accepted Answer

Fluoride incorporation begins immediately on contact with enamel. Remineralisation of early lesions occurs over weeks of regular use. Full protective benefit requires consistent use (3 times daily).

Question 2

Can children under 16 use Duraphat?

Accepted Answer

No – Duraphat is not intended for under‑16s due to risk of dental fluorosis. Younger children should use lower‑fluoride toothpaste (1000‑1450 ppm).

Question 3

What happens if I swallow Duraphat?

Accepted Answer

Small amounts occasionally swallowed are unlikely to cause harm. Regular swallowing may lead to fluorosis. If a large amount is ingested, seek medical help immediately.

Question 4

Can I use other fluoride products with Duraphat?

Accepted Answer

Avoid fluoride tablets, drops, gels, or varnishes during Duraphat use to prevent excessive intake. Fluoridated water should also be considered in total fluoride assessment.

Question 5

Is Duraphat safe during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

There is limited data; consult your dentist or doctor. If used, spit out thoroughly and do not swallow. The benefits of caries prevention may outweigh potential risks.
