What is Zidoval Gel?
Zidoval Vaginal Gel is a prescription-only antibacterial medicine. Its active ingredient is Metronidazole, which belongs to a class of drugs called nitroimidazole antibiotics.
Mechanism of Action
Think of the bacteria causing BV as tiny factories. Metronidazole works by entering these bacterial "factories" and interfering with their essential internal machinery (specifically, their DNA). This damage prevents the bacteria from multiplying and surviving, effectively killing them and clearing the infection at the source.
Biologically, Metronidazole is a prodrug. It becomes activated only inside the specific anaerobic (non-oxygen loving) bacteria responsible for BV. Once activated, it creates toxic compounds that break down the bacteria's genetic material, leading to cell death.
What is Zidoval Gel Used For?
Zidoval Gel is used for a single, approved indication:
- Treatment of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) in adults.
BV is a common condition caused by an imbalance of the natural bacteria in the vagina. Zidoval Gel is applied directly into the vagina, delivering the antibiotic precisely where it's needed to destroy the overgrown harmful bacteria and restore balance.
Important Safety Notice:
Important: Zidoval Gel is only for vaginal use. It is not intended for use in the mouth, eyes, or on the skin. Complete the full 5-day course as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent recurrence.
Before Using Zidoval Gel
Before starting treatment, discuss your medical history with your clinician. Special consideration is needed if you:
- Have ever had any blood disorders.
- Have, or think you may have, a vaginal thrush (candidiasis) infection, as symptoms may become more noticeable.
- Are currently on your period.
- Are due to have blood tests, as metronidazole can interfere with some results.
As with all vaginal infections, it is advisable to avoid sexual intercourse during the infection and while using Zidoval Gel to aid healing and prevent irritation.
Zidoval Gel Contraindications
Absolute contraindications where Zidoval Gel must not be used:
Absolute Contraindications
- Are allergic to metronidazole, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
- Are allergic to any other similar nitroimidazole antibiotics (e.g., tinidazole).

- Cyclosporin - used for autoimmune diseases and rheumatoid arthritis.
- 5-fluorouracil - used for skin problems and cancer treatment.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

- For five consecutive days.
Use a fresh disposable applicator for each dose.
Administration Instructions
Step-by-step application guide:
Preparation Steps
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Open the tube: Remove the cap and pierce the sealed end with the pointed end of the cap.
- Fill the applicator: Screw an applicator onto the tube. Gently squeeze the tube from the bottom until the plunger stops (this is the 5g dose). Remove the applicator and replace the cap on the tube.
Application Process
- Insert the applicator: Lie on your back with knees bent. Hold the barrel and gently insert the applicator into the vagina as far as is comfortable.
- Release the gel: Slowly push the plunger all the way down to release the gel.
- Remove the applicator and throw it in the bin immediately. Do not reuse.
Missed Dose Management
If you forget to use Zidoval Gel at your usual time, do not double the dose to make up for the forgotten one. Simply apply the gel at your next bedtime and continue with the course as normal.

Zidoval Vaginal Gel FAQs
Can I drink alcohol while using Zidoval Gel?
No, you should avoid alcohol whilst using Zidoval Gel and for at least 48 hours after finishing the course. Combining alcohol with metronidazole can cause unpleasant side effects such as feeling or being sick, stomach cramps, headaches, flushing, and an abnormally fast heartbeat.
How quickly does Zidoval Gel work?
Symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis often start to improve within a few days of starting treatment. However, it is crucial to complete the entire 5-day course as prescribed, even if you feel better, to ensure the infection is completely cleared and to reduce the risk of it returning.
Can I have sex while using Zidoval Gel?
It is generally recommended to avoid sexual intercourse during the infection and whilst you are using the treatment. This helps the vagina to heal and can prevent further irritation or reinfection.
What should I do if my BV symptoms come back after treatment?
If your symptoms return after completing the full course of Zidoval Gel, you should consult your doctor or clinician again. They can reassess your condition and may recommend a different treatment or further investigation.
Can I use Zidoval Gel during my period?
You can use Zidoval Gel during your period, but it is advisable to talk to your doctor or pharmacist first. They can provide the best guidance based on your individual situation.
Is Zidoval Gel the same as the oral metronidazole tablets?
They contain the same active ingredient but work differently. Zidoval Gel is applied locally in the vagina, which can reduce the risk of systemic side effects (like nausea or metallic taste) that are more common with oral tablets. Your clinician will recommend the most appropriate form for you.
What's the best time to apply Zidoval Gel?
It's recommended to apply Zidoval Gel at bedtime. This allows the medication to work overnight without being disturbed by daily activities, and helps prevent leakage.
How effective is Zidoval Gel for treating BV?
Zidoval Gel is clinically proven to be effective in treating Bacterial Vaginosis. When used as directed, it successfully clears the infection in most cases. Completing the full 5-day course is essential for maximum effectiveness.
