How To Use Zidoval Gel

Complete Step-by-Step Usage Guide, Dosage Instructions & Safety Information

Key Takeaways: Using Zidoval Gel Correctly

  • Dosage: One 5g applicator full, inserted into the vagina at bedtime for 5 consecutive nights.
  • Application: Use a new disposable applicator each time; discard after use.
  • Hygiene: Wash hands before and after handling the applicator.
  • Course completion: Finish all 5 doses even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection returning.
  • Avoid: Do not use during your period; wait until it ends. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after.
  • Missed dose: If you forget, apply as soon as you remember, but skip if it's nearly time for the next dose—do not double.

Zidoval gel is a prescription vaginal gel used to treat bacterial vaginosis. Using it correctly ensures the medicine works effectively and reduces the chance of side effects. Below we explain exactly how to apply the gel, who can use it, and important safety measures.

When to seek urgent medical help

If you accidentally swallow the gel, experience severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of face/tongue), or notice symptoms like confusion, numbness, or vision problems, stop using Zidoval and contact a doctor immediately.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

Follow these instructions carefully to apply Zidoval gel correctly. The pack contains a 40g tube and 5 disposable applicators—one for each dose.

Before you start

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Remove the cap from the tube. Use the pointed end of the cap to pierce the sealed end of the tube.

Filling the applicator

  1. Screw the open end of a fresh applicator onto the tube.
  2. Squeeze the tube gently from the bottom—the plunger will move upward as the applicator fills.
  3. Keep squeezing slowly until the plunger stops moving. This means the applicator now holds the correct 5g dose.
  4. Unscrew the applicator and replace the cap on the tube.

Inserting the gel

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent (a comfortable position).
  2. Hold the filled applicator by its barrel and gently insert it into the vagina as far as it will comfortably go.
  3. Slowly push the plunger all the way down to release the gel.
  4. Withdraw the applicator and dispose of it immediately in your household waste bin. Do not flush.

Timing: Use the gel just before bedtime so it remains in place overnight. Repeat each night for five consecutive nights, even if your period starts (but ideally avoid using during menstruation—see Special Conditions).

🗒️ Tip: If the gel leaks slightly overnight, this is normal. Wearing a panty liner can protect your underwear.

Dosage Guide

The dose is the same for all adult women prescribed Zidoval gel.

Who Should Use Zidoval Gel

Zidoval gel is for adult women (18 years and older) who have been diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis (BV) by a doctor or nurse. BV occurs when there is an overgrowth of certain anaerobic bacteria in the vagina.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Thin, greyish-white vaginal discharge
  • A strong fishy odour, especially after sex
  • Mild itching or irritation around the vagina

If you have these symptoms, see a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis before using Zidoval.

Who Should NOT Use Zidoval Gel

Do not use Zidoval gel if any of the following apply:

  • Allergy: You are allergic to metronidazole, other nitroimidazole antibiotics (e.g., tinidazole), or any of the ingredients (parabens, propylene glycol, etc.).
  • Blood disorders: You have or have had blood problems (metronidazole can affect blood cell counts).
  • Liver disease: Although systemic absorption is low, caution is needed in severe liver impairment.
  • Pregnancy (first trimester): Generally avoided unless clearly necessary; see below.
  • Breastfeeding: Discuss with your doctor; metronidazole passes into breast milk.

Also avoid using during your period if possible, as menstrual blood can wash away the gel and reduce effectiveness.

Taking Zidoval Gel With or Without Food

Zidoval gel is applied vaginally, so food does not affect its absorption. However, there is an important interaction with alcohol:

Avoid drinking alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after your last dose. Metronidazole can cause a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol, leading to severe nausea, vomiting, flushing, headache, and rapid heartbeat.

Apart from alcohol, no dietary restrictions are needed.

Special Conditions: Pregnancy, Breastfeeding & More

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, think you might be, or are planning a baby, tell your doctor. Zidoval gel is generally avoided in the first trimester unless essential. In later pregnancy, it may be used if the benefits outweigh risks. Always seek medical advice.

Breastfeeding

Metronidazole passes into breast milk. A single 5-day vaginal course is unlikely to harm a nursing infant, but your doctor may suggest pumping and discarding milk during treatment and for 12–24 hours after the last dose to be extra safe. Discuss with your healthcare provider.

Menstruation

It's best not to start treatment during your period because the gel may be flushed out. If you get your period mid-course, continue using the gel, but be aware it may be less effective. Use a sanitary pad instead of a tampon while using Zidoval.

Sexual intercourse

Avoid sex during treatment. The gel can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms, and intercourse may introduce new bacteria. Also, your partner might experience mild irritation.

Missed dose

If you forget a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one—do not double up.

Zidoval Gel Usage FAQs

Zidoval treats bacterial vaginosis, not thrush (candidiasis). If you have thrush symptoms (thick white discharge, intense itching), tell your doctor—you may need antifungal treatment separately.

A small amount of leakage is normal. Using a panty liner can protect your underwear. To minimise leakage, insert the gel just before lying down.

No, avoid tampons during treatment. They may absorb the gel and reduce its effectiveness. Use sanitary pads if you have your period.

Wait until you have completed the full 5-day course and your symptoms have cleared. Also, remember that the gel can weaken latex condoms for up to 72 hours after the last dose.

Rinse your mouth and drink a glass of water. Contact your doctor or NHS 111 for advice. If you experience severe symptoms, go to A&E.
