Airomir Autohaler
A fast-acting reliever inhaler to ease asthma symptoms when they occur.
The Airomir Autohaler is a pressurised metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) that uses breath-actuation technology. This means it automatically releases the medicine when you begin to breathe in, making it easier to use correctly. Its active ingredient, salbutamol sulfate, is a bronchodilator that works rapidly to relax the muscles in the airways, providing relief from wheezing, chest tightness, and breathlessness. It is essential for managing sudden asthma symptoms and preventing exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
You must complete a short online consultation so that our prescriber can ensure that the treatment is suitable for you.

What is Airomir?
Active Ingredient: Salbutamol Sulfate.
Drug Class: Short-Acting Beta2-Agonist (SABA).
Mechanism of Action: Airomir works by selectively targeting and stimulating beta2-receptors in the muscles lining the airways. Think of these receptors like a "keyhole" and salbutamol as the "key". When the key turns, it signals the tight muscles to relax, which widens the airways (bronchodilation). This process allows more air to flow in and out of the lungs, rapidly relieving the feeling of tightness and wheezing associated with an asthma attack.
This action begins within minutes, making it an excellent choice for quick symptom relief.
What is Airomir Used For?
Airomir is approved for the following uses:
- Symptomatic Relief of Asthma: To quickly ease acute episodes of bronchospasm (tightening of the airways) in asthma.
- Prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB): Used shortly before physical activity to prevent asthma symptoms triggered by exercise.
It is intended for "as-needed" use and is not a substitute for maintenance controller therapy in persistent asthma.
Emergency Warning
If your usual dose of Airomir does not provide relief, or its effects don't last as long as usual, this is a sign your asthma may be worsening. Seek immediate medical attention. Do not repeatedly use your reliever inhaler without effect. Always carry your reliever inhaler with you.
Before Using Airomir
Before starting Airomir, discuss your full medical history with your doctor. Special consideration is needed if you have or have had:
- Heart problems (e.g., arrhythmias, angina)
- High blood pressure
- Overactive thyroid gland (thyrotoxicosis)
- Diabetes (salbutamol can increase blood sugar)
- Low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalaemia)
Airomir Contraindications
Do not use Airomir if you:
- Are allergic to salbutamol sulfate or any of the other ingredients listed in Section 9.
This is an absolute contraindication.
Special Population Considerations
Elderly: May be more susceptible to the effects of salbutamol on the heart. Dose adjustment may be necessary.
Children: Can be used by children, but should be supervised by a responsible adult to ensure correct technique.
Renal/Hepatic Impairment: No specific dosage adjustment is recommended, but caution is advised. Use under medical supervision.
Airomir and Other Medicines
Always tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking. Airomir can interact with:
- Beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol for high blood pressure): Can reduce the effect of Airomir and may cause severe bronchospasm.
- Diuretics ("water pills"): May increase the risk of low potassium levels (hypokalaemia).
- Digoxin (for heart conditions): The risk of irregular heart rhythms may be increased.
- Other bronchodilators or theophylline: May potentiate side effects like a fast heart rate.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Pregnancy: You should not use Airomir if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. Salbutamol can cross the placenta and may affect the developing baby. Only use if clearly necessary and under strict medical supervision.
Breastfeeding: Salbutamol is excreted in breast milk. The risk to the infant is not known. Do not use while breastfeeding unless your doctor advises it is essential.
Driving & Machine Operation
Airomir may cause side effects such as dizziness or lightheadedness in some people. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Airomir affects you and you are sure it does not impair your abilities.
Airomir Ingredients
Active Ingredient:
- Salbutamol Sulfate (100 mcg per puff)
Other Ingredients (Excipients):
- Ethanol (alcohol) - acts as a solvent
- Oleic Acid - acts as a stabiliser
- Norflurane (HFA-134a) - the propellant that delivers the medication
Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to any of the above ingredients.
How to Use Airomir
The Airomir Autohaler is breath-actuated, meaning it releases medicine automatically when you breathe in correctly. Follow these steps for each puff.
Airomir Dosage Guidelines
| Population | Dose for Symptom Relief | Dose Before Exercise | Maximum Daily Dose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adults & Children (12+) | 1-2 puffs | 1-2 puffs | Do not exceed 16 puffs in 24 hours unless directed by a doctor. |
| Children (under 12) | As directed by a doctor | As directed by a doctor | As directed by a doctor. |

Administration Instructions
- Remove the Mouthpiece Cover and Shake: Unclip the cover. Check the mouthpiece is clean. Hold the Autohaler upright and shake well.
- Hold Upright and Push Lever Up: Push the lever up until it clicks and stays up. Ensure your hand isn't blocking the air vent at the bottom.
- Breathe Out and Position Mouthpiece: Breathe out fully away from the mouthpiece. Then place your lips tightly around it.
- Breathe In: Breathe in slowly and deeply. You will hear a 'click and whoosh' – do not stop breathing in when you hear this. Continue to take a full, deep breath.
- Hold Your Breath: Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly.
- Push Lever Down: Return the lever to the down position. If you need a second puff, wait about one minute and repeat steps 2-6.
Missed Dose Management
Airomir is used "as needed" for symptom relief. Therefore, the concept of a "missed dose" does not apply. Use it when you experience symptoms of bronchospasm or before exercise as directed.
Overdose Information
Overuse of Airomir can be harmful. Symptoms may include:
- Fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat (tachycardia/palpitations)
- Feeling tense, shaky, or nervous
- Headache
- Significantly low potassium levels (can cause muscle cramps, weakness, irregular heartbeat)
If you have taken too much Airomir, seek immediate medical attention, even if you feel well. Contact your doctor, go to the nearest hospital, or call the UK National Poisons Information Service on 111.

Airomir FAQs
What is the difference between Airomir and a regular salbutamol inhaler (e.g., Ventolin Evohaler)?
The main difference is the device. The Airomir Autohaler is breath-actuated, meaning it automatically releases the medicine when you breathe in correctly. A regular pMDI like the Ventolin Evohaler requires you to press the canister down and breathe in at exactly the same time, which some people find difficult to coordinate. The medication inside (salbutamol) is the same.
How do I know if my Airomir Autohaler is empty?
The Airomir Autohaler does not have a dose counter. To check if it's empty, you can "test fire" it as per the instructions in the PIL. Release a puff into the air (away from your face). If you do not hear or feel a puff being discharged, it is likely empty. It's a good practice to note the date you start a new inhaler or keep track of the number of puffs used.
Can I use Airomir every day?
Airomir is a reliever and is intended for occasional, as-needed use. If you find you need to use it more than three times a week, or you are using it daily, this is a sign that your asthma is not well controlled. You should see your doctor for a review, as you may need a preventer inhaler for long-term control.
Why is my Airomir inhaler not working?
Common reasons include: 1) It is empty. 2) The mouthpiece is blocked (clean it as per instructions). 3) Incorrect assembly – ensure the metal canister's narrow stem is fitted into the small socket inside the plastic holder. 4) Incorrect breathing technique – remember to breathe in slowly and deeply when you hear the 'click'.
Can I drink alcohol while using Airomir?
There is no known direct interaction. However, both alcohol and salbutamol can sometimes cause similar side effects like dizziness or lightheadedness. It is advisable to discuss alcohol consumption with your doctor to understand any potential risks for you personally.
