What is Logynon?

Logynon ED contains two synthetic female hormones: ethinylestradiol (a type of oestrogen) and levonorgestrel (a type of progestogen). It belongs to the drug class known as combined hormonal contraceptives (CHCs) or combined oral contraceptives (COCs).

Mechanism of Action

Logynon works through three primary mechanisms:

  • Prevents Ovulation: Inhibits the release of an egg from your ovaries
  • Thickens Cervical Mucus: Creates a barrier that is difficult for sperm to penetrate
  • Alters Womb Lining: Makes the endometrium less suitable for a fertilised egg to implant

What is a "Tri-Phasic" Pill?

Unlike some pills that have the same dose every day, Logynon is "tri-phasic." This means the dose of hormones changes three times during the 21-day cycle of active pills to mimic a more natural hormonal pattern, which some women find leads to fewer side effects. The pack contains light brown, white, and ochre tablets, each with a different hormone combination.

What is Logynon Used For?

Approved Indications: Logynon ED is indicated for:

  1. Oral Contraception: Prevention of pregnancy
  2. Recognised Gynaecological Indications: For other conditions where an oestrogen-progestogen combination is recognised as suitable treatment

Important Safety Notice

Logynon ED is NOT indicated for the treatment of allergies, hay fever, or any allergic conditions. It contains hormones that affect the reproductive system and will not alleviate symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, or a runny nose. Using it for this purpose provides no therapeutic benefit and exposes you to unnecessary risks. For allergy treatment, please visit our allergy and hay fever treatment page.

Target Patient Populations

Logynon may be prescribed to women of reproductive age who require reversible contraception, provided they have no contraindications. It is not intended for use by women who have already been through the menopause.

Before Using Logynon

A thorough medical assessment is required before starting any combined hormonal contraceptive. Our online consultation will guide you through this.

Medical History Assessment Checklist

  • Personal or family history of blood clots, heart attack, or stroke
  • History of migraines, especially with aura (visual disturbances)
  • History of breast cancer or other cancers
  • History of liver or gallbladder disease
  • History of high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Current pregnancy or plans to become pregnant
  • Smoking status and age

Required Baseline Tests/Evaluations

  • Blood Pressure Check: Must be checked before starting and then at least once a year while taking it
  • Weight and BMI: Will be recorded as obesity is a risk factor for blood clots
  • Medical Review: A discussion of all risks and benefits with a clinician

Logynon Contraindications

Do not take Logynon if you have any of the following conditions:

Condition CategorySpecific Examples
Blood Clot Disorders Current or history of venous thromboembolism (VTE) like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). Known predisposition to clots (e.g., Factor V Leiden). Major surgery with prolonged immobilisation
Arterial Disease Current or history of stroke, heart attack (myocardial infarction), or angina. History of migraine with focal neurological symptoms (aura)
Tumours/Cancers Current or history of breast cancer or cancer of the genital tract. Current or history of benign or malignant liver tumours
Liver Disease Severe liver disease (e.g., active hepatitis, severe cirrhosis) until liver function is normal
Other Hypersensitivity to any ingredient. Unexplained vaginal bleeding. Pregnancy. Concomitant use with certain hepatitis C medicines

Critical Safety Warning

STOP taking this medicine and seek immediate medical advice if you experience signs of a blood clot: severe chest pain, sudden breathlessness, unusual cough/coughing up blood, severe pain/swelling in one leg, sudden severe headache, sudden problems with speech/vision, dizziness/collapse, weakness/numbness on one side of the body.

Special Population Considerations

Elderly Patients

  • Not applicable. Contraception is not required post-menopause

Renal Impairment

  • No specific studies, but no special dosage adjustments are expected to be needed

Hepatic (Liver) Impairment

  • Contraindicated in severe liver disease
  • Should not be used until liver function tests return to normal

Adolescents

  • Logynon can be used after menstruation has started
  • Efficacy and safety are expected to be the same as in adults

Smokers

  • Women over 35 who smoke should not use combined oral contraceptives due to a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular events

Logynon and Other Medicines

Some medicines can make Logynon less effective or increase the risk of side effects. Always inform your clinician of ALL medicines you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, herbal remedies, and supplements.

High-Risk Interactions

  • Certain Hepatitis C Treatments: Medicines containing ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir and dasabuvir, glecaprevir/pibrentasvir, or sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir are contraindicated with Logynon
  • Enzyme-Inducing Medicines: Drugs used for epilepsy (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine), tuberculosis (e.g., rifampicin), and some HIV treatments can reduce the contraceptive effect. Additional barrier contraception (e.g., condoms) is required while taking them and for 28 days after stopping
  • Antibiotics: Broad-spectrum antibiotics (e.g., ampicillin) may reduce efficacy. Use additional contraception during and for 7 days after the antibiotic course

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy

  • Do not take Logynon if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant
  • If you become pregnant while taking it, stop taking it immediately and contact your doctor

Breastfeeding

  • Combined oral contraceptives are generally not recommended for breastfeeding mothers as they may reduce milk production and quality
  • Progestogen-only pills (mini-pills) are usually the preferred choice during breastfeeding
  • Consult your doctor or health visitor for advice

Driving & Machine Operation

Logynon has no known influence on the ability to drive or use machines. However, if you experience side effects like dizziness, nausea, or visual disturbances (which could be a sign of migraine with aura, a serious condition), you should not drive or operate machinery until you feel well.

Standard Dosage

One tablet daily, taken orally at about the same time each day. Swallow whole with water; it can be taken with or without food.

Step-by-Step Administration

  1. Starting Your First Pack:
    • No recent hormonal contraception: Start on day 1 of your menstrual period (the first day of bleeding). You are protected from pregnancy immediately
    • Switching from a 21-day pill: Start Logynon the day after the last active pill of your old pack. No break, no extra protection needed
    • Switching from a progestogen-only pill (POP/mini-pill): Start on the first day of bleeding, even if you have already taken a POP that day. Discard any remaining POPs
  2. Daily Routine: Follow the arrows on the blister pack. Take the correct coloured tablet for that day
  3. Finishing a Pack: After the 21 active (small) tablets, take the 7 placebo (large white) tablets. A withdrawal bleed (period) usually occurs during these 7 days
  4. Starting the Next Pack: Start the next pack immediately the day after finishing the last placebo tablet. Do not take a break between packs

Missed Dose Management

General Rule

If you are less than 12 hours late taking an active (small) pill, take it as soon as you remember and take the next one at the usual time. Contraceptive protection is maintained.

If you are more than 12 hours late taking one or more active pills, the advice depends on where you are in the pack.

Missed Active Pill Guidance

When was the pill missed?ActionAdditional Contraception Needed?
Week 1 (Pills 1-7) Take the most recent missed pill now. Omit earlier ones. Continue pack as normal. YES. Use condoms for next 7 days.
Week 2 (Pills 8-14) Take the most recent missed pill now. Omit earlier ones. Continue pack as normal. NO, provided you took all pills correctly in the 7 days before the first missed pill. Otherwise, use condoms for 7 days.
Week 3 (Pills 15-21) Option A: Take the most recent missed pill now, omit earlier ones. Finish active pills, then skip the placebo pills and start a new pack the next day.
Option B: Stop the current pack, take a 7-day pill-free break (including the day you remembered), then start a new pack.
YES. Use condoms until 7 active pills have been taken correctly in a row from the new pack.

Missed Placebo Pills

You can ignore missed placebo (large white) tablets. Discard the missed ones. Take the next one at the usual time. Contraceptive protection remains.

Vomiting/Diarrhoea

If you vomit within 4 hours of taking a pill, it may not have been absorbed. Treat this as a missed pill. If severe diarrhoea continues for more than 24 hours, use additional contraception (condoms) until 7 active pills have been taken correctly after recovery.

Overdose Information

Serious effects from taking several tablets at once are unlikely. Symptoms might include nausea, vomiting, and in young girls, slight vaginal bleeding. There is no specific antidote. Treatment would be based on symptoms. If a large overdose is taken, contact a doctor or hospital Accident & Emergency department immediately. Take the medicine pack with you.

Logynon ED FAQs

No, absolutely not. Logynon is a hormonal contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. It has no effect on the immune system or histamine pathways involved in allergic reactions. Taking it for allergies is ineffective and exposes you to unnecessary risks associated with hormonal contraception. For allergy treatment, please see our allergy and hay fever treatment page.

When taken perfectly (correctly and consistently), Logynon is over 99% effective. This means fewer than 1 woman in 100 will get pregnant in a year of perfect use. With "typical use" (accounting for missed pills), the effectiveness is around 91%, meaning roughly 9 in 100 women may get pregnant in a year.

If you start on day 1 of your period (the first day of bleeding), you are protected immediately. If you start at any other time, you may need to use additional contraception (like condoms) for the first 7 days. Your clinician will advise you during your consultation.

Follow the detailed guidance in the Missed Dose section above and the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL). The key factor is how many hours late you are and which week of the pack you are in. If you are more than 12 hours late taking an active pill, you will usually need to use condoms for 7 days. If you miss pills in the last week (pills 15-21), you may need to skip the placebo tablets and start a new pack immediately to maintain protection.

No. Logynon is a Prescription-Only Medicine (POM). Legitimate online services, like Chemist Doctor, require you to complete a confidential online consultation with a UK-registered clinician. A prescription will only be issued if the treatment is deemed safe and appropriate for you.

No. Logynon only prevents pregnancy. To protect yourself from STIs, including HIV, you need to use a barrier method such as male or female condoms.

Yes. Blood pressure must be checked before starting and then at least once a year while you are taking it. Your weight and full medical history will also be assessed. It is recommended to have regular cervical screening (smear tests) as per national guidelines.

The most serious known risk is an increased chance of developing a blood clot (venous thromboembolism or VTE) compared to not using a combined hormonal contraceptive. The risk is still small but is highest in the first year of use. Other risks include a possible small increased risk of breast and cervical cancer with long-term use, and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke, particularly if you smoke and are over 35.

Not necessarily. It is common for periods to become very light or even stop altogether while on the pill. However, if you have missed any active pills or taken any medicines that might interfere with the pill, or if you have no withdrawal bleed for two consecutive cycles, you should take a pregnancy test or see your doctor to rule out pregnancy before starting a new pack.

For full information, always read the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) inside your medicine pack. You can also view it online at the electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC). For personalised medical advice, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or our clinicians via your patient record.
